Deputy Ruler inaugurates Sir Bu Nair Festival 2026 celebrating marine conservation

H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi opened the environmental celebration at Al Heera Beach, showcasing the ecological significance of Sir Bu Nair Island through education, heritage and community engagement.

The Sir Bu Nair Festival 2026 has commenced at Al Heera Beach in Sharjah under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. Organised by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, this twelve-day celebration runs from 7th to 18th October and represents a comprehensive initiative to foster environmental stewardship and deepen public appreciation for the emirate’s natural heritage.

The inaugural ceremony featured a striking maritime-themed performance by the Zeina Al Sharjah troupe of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, which beautifully captured the historical bond between the UAE people and the Arabian Gulf. An innovative visual presentation subsequently transported attendees through Sir Bu Nair Island’s compelling narrative, presenting its pristine beaches, distinctive landscapes and abundant wildlife in vivid detail.

During the opening, His Highness acknowledged the contributions of strategic partners and supporting organisations whose collaboration proved instrumental to the festival’s realisation. He subsequently toured multiple festival sections, including interactive educational workshops designed to elucidate environmental concepts and strengthen public awareness regarding natural resource conservation.

The “Discover Sir Bu Nair Island Reserve” exhibition provides an immersive experience through photographs, specimens and informative displays chronicling the island’s history and natural environment. Notably, the exhibition emphasises coral restoration initiatives and reef ecosystems, heightening visitor understanding of marine biodiversity’s critical importance.

The Sir Bu Nair Festival Village showcases pavilions and activities from participating organisations, complemented by dining facilities and diverse recreational experiences that enrich the festival atmosphere. The 2026 edition prioritises coral reefs and their essential role in maintaining marine ecosystem balance, reinforcing the Environment and Protected Areas Authority’s commitment to marine habitat protection and community connection to Sharjah’s natural legacy.

The comprehensive programme encompasses workshops, interactive activities, exhibitions, environmental experiences and sporting and maritime events, offering visitors an engaging blend of education, recreation and community participation. These offerings provide detailed exploration of the island’s natural and marine characteristics whilst highlighting ongoing biodiversity and habitat preservation efforts.

Senior officials attending the inauguration included Sheikh Majid bin Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Districts Affairs Department; Ali Salem Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah International Airport Authority; Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; Aisha Rashid Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority; and Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of BEEAH.
