Environment Agency Abu Dhabi Opens 2026–2027 Falconry Season

The traditional hunting season commences on 20 October, reinforcing the UAE's commitment to preserving falconry whilst safeguarding wildlife and natural habitats.
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has formally announced the opening of the 2026–2027 traditional hunting season for falconry, which will operate from 20 October 2026 through 31 January 2027. This seasonal framework is established under Law No. (22) of 2005 concerning hunting in Abu Dhabi and its Executive Regulations, representing a carefully balanced approach to cultural preservation and environmental stewardship.
The season reflects EAD’s steadfast commitment to maintaining falconry as an integral component of the UAE’s rich cultural heritage, whilst simultaneously ensuring the protection of wildlife and natural ecosystems. This dual commitment underscores the thoughtful governance approach that characterises Abu Dhabi’s environmental management.
Access to the 2026–2027 season is strictly limited to licensed falconers, with hunting restricted exclusively to captive-bred Houbara bustards. Permitted hunting areas encompass open spaces throughout Abu Dhabi, provided they are situated at least two kilometres distant from main and secondary roads, and from designated restricted zones including protected areas, forests, residential and military installations, petroleum facilities and private property.
The licensing framework operates under Resolution No. (5) of 2021, which refined specific provisions within the Executive Regulations of the Hunting Law. Prospective applicants must be UAE nationals aged 18 or above, and all falcons utilised for hunting must be registered within the national falcon registration system administered by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.
The application process has been streamlined through the TAMM smart application and website, accessible via UAE Pass. Applicants should navigate to ‘Leisure’ services under Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, select the ‘Issuance of Falconry Licence’ option, accept relevant terms and conditions, and remit the seasonal fee of AED 127. Electronic licence issuance follows promptly thereafter.
Licence holders are subject to rigorous environmental obligations. Hunting activities are permissible solely between sunrise and sunset, with licences valid for one season only. Falconers must refrain from hunting, pursuing or disturbing other wild animals, birds or reptiles; must not drive across or damage vegetation; and are prohibited from transferring their licence to another party. All licence holders must maintain their permit whilst hunting and present it to relevant authorities upon request, whilst maintaining the cleanliness of natural areas and ensuring responsible waste disposal.
Through strategic collaboration with the Emirates Falconers’ Club and other partners, EAD continues establishing science-based regulatory controls and comprehensive implementation measures that facilitate falconry conducted to the highest standards, fully aligned with international best practice.
