Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority Unveils AI-Powered Driving Test System

The next-generation Smart Test System leverages artificial intelligence and advanced technology to deliver objective assessments and enhance road safety through intelligent monitoring and real-time intervention capabilities.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has unveiled an innovative Smart Test System for light-vehicle assessments, representing a significant advance in the digitalisation of driver licensing services across the emirate. The system harnesses artificial intelligence, computer vision and sophisticated data analytics to establish consistent, objective evaluation standards whilst elevating the overall experience for those undertaking driving tests.

The technology addresses a fundamental challenge in driver assessment: ensuring uniformity and eliminating subjective variation in how tests are conducted and evaluated. By automating the analysis of learner performance against standardised criteria, the system significantly reduces inconsistencies that might otherwise arise from human assessment alone. This advancement strengthens public confidence in test results and contributes meaningfully to the broader objective of enhancing road safety.

Sultan Al Akraf, Director of Drivers Licensing at RTA’s Licensing Agency, emphasised that the system represents an important milestone in the authority’s smart transformation agenda. The technology integrates seamlessly into test vehicles, monitoring learner performance and analysing driving manoeuvres in real time without human intervention in calculating results.

The system incorporates several sophisticated safeguards and verification measures. Facial recognition technology verifies learner identity, whilst advanced monitoring captures safety-critical behaviours including mirror checks, blind-spot awareness and steering wheel hand positioning. Real-Time Kinematic positioning technology delivers accuracy to within two centimetres, enabling precise detection of errors relating to vehicle path, parking position and other intricate manoeuvres.

An intelligent collision avoidance system with preventive automatic emergency braking represents perhaps the most significant safety innovation, intervening when potential collisions or safety risks emerge. This creates a demonstrably safer testing environment by preventing risks from developing into accidents. The technology operates reliably across varying weather and lighting conditions throughout the day and night.

The system presents assessment results in an intuitive visual format, enabling learners to comprehend their performance clearly and identify specific areas requiring further development. An interactive three-dimensional map allows candidates to review their test route and pinpoint locations where significant or minor errors occurred, supporting self-directed improvement.

Integration with training systems enables the authority to identify individual learning requirements and develop bespoke training programmes tailored to each learner’s specific needs. This data-driven approach enhances the overall fairness, efficiency and transparency of driver testing across Dubai.
