Landmark awareness initiative for pulmonary fibrosis launched across the UAE

Leading healthcare professionals and a prominent biopharmaceutical organisation have unveiled a comprehensive campaign to enhance recognition of two progressive lung conditions, with the premiere of a specially commissioned film bringing together pulmonologists and rheumatologists in Dubai.

A significant new initiative has been launched across the United Arab Emirates to elevate public and professional awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Progressive Pulmonary Fibrosis (PPF), two progressive lung conditions that profoundly affect the daily lives of those they impact. The campaign, spearheaded by Boehringer Ingelheim, a distinguished research-driven biopharmaceutical organisation, premiered a specially commissioned short film in Dubai, bringing together eminent healthcare professionals from respiratory and rheumatological disciplines.

The premiere event convened leading pulmonologists and rheumatologists, including Dr. Bassam Mahboub, Vice-President of the Emirates Thoracic Society, and Dr. Shamma Al Nokhatha, President of the Emirates Society for Rheumatology, to advance understanding of these conditions and emphasise the critical importance of early recognition.

Understanding Progressive Lung Fibrosis

Both IPF and PPF are characterised by progressive scarring of the lungs, resulting in an irreversible decline in pulmonary function and diminished oxygen uptake. Whilst the cause of IPF remains unknown, PPF may develop in individuals with other existing conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis. Symptoms commonly include a persistent dry cough, breathlessness and fatigue, manifestations frequently attributed to ageing, tiredness or deconditioning. As these conditions progress, even routine daily activities become increasingly taxing, and the associated health risks intensify considerably.

Though classified as rare conditions, IPF and PPF are estimated to affect approximately 9.2 million people globally. The progressive nature of these diseases makes early recognition particularly vital, yet research indicates that diagnosis is frequently delayed by one to two years, underscoring the importance of heightened awareness among both patients and healthcare practitioners.

A Transformative Moment in Patient Care

This awareness campaign emerges at a pivotal juncture for pulmonary fibrosis care within the Emirates, following the recent regulatory approval of a new treatment option for both IPF and PPF. This milestone represents significant progress for patients living with these progressive diseases, following more than a decade during which no new treatment had demonstrated efficacy in IPF.

Dr. Mahboub observed that pulmonary fibrosis care stands at an important transitional point, with early recognition, strengthened multidisciplinary assessment and prompt intervention becoming increasingly integral to the patient journey. The challenge, he noted, lies in ensuring that symptoms such as breathlessness prompt thorough investigation rather than passive acceptance.

Dr. Al Nokhatha emphasised that the advancement of pulmonary fibrosis care must extend beyond scientific progress to encompass the effective translation of innovation into earlier recognition and improved patient outcomes. This requires strengthened awareness across patients, families and healthcare professionals, ensuring that individuals experiencing persistent symptoms receive timely connection to appropriate care.
