Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure strengthens federal road resilience ahead of rainy season

Comprehensive preparations underscore commitment to safety and service continuity through advanced monitoring, preventive maintenance and coordinated emergency response

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has undertaken an extensive programme of enhancement to federal road networks and associated water management infrastructure, ensuring optimal readiness for the forthcoming rainy season. This proactive initiative reflects the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property whilst maintaining uninterrupted traffic flow across the nation’s critical transportation corridors.

The comprehensive preparations encompass the inspection and meticulous maintenance of stormwater drainage networks, the systematic clearing of waterways at wadi intersections with federal roads, and the assurance of operational excellence across 17 pumping stations and 800 stormwater drainage culverts. These facilities represent the backbone of the country’s flood mitigation infrastructure, requiring rigorous attention to structural integrity and functional capability.

Specialised field teams have been equipped and deployed throughout the network, furnished with advanced machinery and equipment to address water accumulation and respond swiftly to variable weather conditions. This strategic deployment enables accelerated response times, enhanced road safety, and the preservation of traffic continuity during periods of elevated rainfall.

The Ministry operates a sophisticated, continuous monitoring system for dams and wadis, incorporating surveillance technology and precision sensors that measure water levels and flow rates in real time. An integrated early warning mechanism connects directly to the control centre and relevant national authorities, enabling anticipatory action, timely alerts, and protective measures to safeguard communities and infrastructure.

Central to this initiative is the operation of a modern control centre providing continuous real-time oversight of federal road conditions and field developments. This facility supports instantaneous decision-making and the coordinated deployment of emergency and maintenance teams to affected areas, ensuring minimal disruption and maximal responsiveness to rainfall events.

Eng. Mohammed Al Mansoori, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs, emphasised that the Ministry’s rainy season preparations commence well in advance, beginning with comprehensive assessments of federal roads, dams, and water infrastructure. He articulated the Ministry’s commitment to developing integrated operational systems that combine preventive maintenance, continuous monitoring, and coordinated field response, thereby ensuring road user safety and service continuity.

The Ministry continues collaborative coordination with federal and local partners to strengthen joint preparedness, review emergency protocols, and refine field response procedures. This partnership approach facilitates rapid information exchange, clarified responsibilities, and effective management of diverse rainfall scenarios whilst minimising impacts upon lives, property, and infrastructure.
