Objects of Intention: Inside NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026

Read by Emma, the Simply Abu Dhabi narrator.
There exists a quiet conversation between the hand that shapes and the material being shaped. We see it in the sculptural furniture on view, in vessels formed without haste, in lighting that catches the eye because it has first caught the light itself. This is the spirit animating NOMAD Abu Dhabi 2026, where more than fifty international and regional galleries gather to present a curated selection of objects that resist easy categorisation, moving instead between the categories of fine art, functional design and the spaces in between.
Bronze speaks one language, textiles another. Lacquer holds depth and reflection; mother-of-pearl transforms according to the angle of viewing. Each material carries knowledge, some of it ancient, some of it freshly conceived. What unites these works is a conviction that contemporary expression need not abandon tradition, and that tradition, when approached with intelligence and sensitivity, remains urgently alive.
The dialogue these objects enact is threefold: between material and maker, between maker and user, and across the generations and cultures through which certain knowledge passes. A hand-shaped vessel is never merely functional. Sculptural furniture asks us to reconsider what a chair or table might be. Lighting becomes an exploration of form and shadow as much as illumination.
NOMAD takes place within Terminal 1 at the Old Abu Dhabi Airport, a landmark of Arabian modernism whose architectural language already speaks to questions of form, function and cultural identity. The venue itself becomes part of the conversation, offering new spaces within a structure that has long held meaning in the city’s evolving narrative.
This is the second edition of NOMAD, a gathering that has established itself as a platform for collectible design, contemporary art, jewellery and craft. To attend is to move through a landscape of intention, where every object has been chosen because it embodies a particular vision of what beauty and meaning might look like in our moment.
