Sharjah Judicial Council Embraces AI Governance and Specialised Courts

The Emirate advances its justice system with comprehensive artificial intelligence framework and new municipal court
Sharjah’s judicial leadership has approved significant measures to modernise the Emirate’s justice system, reflecting a commitment to technological advancement and specialised legal expertise.
H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Judicial Council, presided over the Judicial Council’s meeting on Thursday at the Sharjah Judicial Department, where he extended congratulations to council members, judiciary officials and administrative staff on commencing the new judicial year. His Highness emphasised the importance of continued dedication to serving justice and upholding the rule of law, thereby strengthening the institutional standing of Sharjah’s judicial system and its vital role in society.
The Deputy Ruler commended the judiciary’s achievements and developments during the preceding period, acknowledging the dedication and professional responsibility demonstrated by judicial members. He stressed the necessity of enhancing performance standards and improving judicial service quality in alignment with the Emirate’s progressive aspirations.
The Council’s principal approvals centre on two transformative initiatives. Firstly, it endorsed the Governance Guide for the Management and Use of Artificial Intelligence Technologies in the Judicial System, establishing a unified institutional framework for the controlled and secure deployment of such technologies. The comprehensive guide addresses the full lifecycle of AI systems, encompassing monitoring mechanisms, auditing protocols, risk management and data protection measures. It establishes specific controls and standards governing AI application within judicial contexts, ensuring human oversight remains paramount whilst advancing administrative and judicial efficiency.
The guide’s framework protects legal rights and safeguards whilst promoting responsible technological deployment. It enables reliable AI application that advances judicial system development, keeping pace with technological progress and supporting the Emirate’s digital transformation agenda.
Secondly, the Council approved establishing a specialised Public Prosecution and Court dedicated to Municipal and Environmental Affairs. This institutional development strengthens Sharjah’s specialised justice system, enabling expedited procedural handling and enhanced judicial quality. The initiative exemplifies the Council’s strategic approach to developing the judicial system, ensuring readiness for future transformations and establishing a justice infrastructure that seamlessly integrates efficiency, specialisation and technological innovation.
Additionally, the Council approved new judicial attire for members of the judiciary, reinforcing the institutional identity and professional standing of the judicial authority whilst reflecting the dignity and high regard this institution commands within society.
