Sharjah Private Education Authority Establishes Comprehensive Ethical Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Schools

A pioneering initiative to ensure the responsible and secure integration of artificial intelligence across Sharjah's private educational institutions, balancing technological advancement with the protection of learners and the preservation of pedagogical excellence.
The Sharjah Private Education Authority has unveiled an expansive ethical framework designed to orchestrate the thoughtful and conscientious deployment of artificial intelligence across the emirate’s private educational landscape. This carefully conceived initiative endeavours to harmonise technological innovation with the imperative to safeguard learner privacy, maintain academic integrity and uphold the irreplaceable human dimensions of education.
Reflecting the United Arab Emirates’ national directives and foundational values, the framework places particular emphasis upon fairness, transparency, accountability, human oversight, cybersecurity and the cultivation of critical thinking capabilities. It establishes a structured approach to ensuring that artificial intelligence serves as an instrument for educational enhancement rather than replacement of essential human judgement and pedagogical expertise.
Aisha Butti Al Ghafli, Director of the Curriculum and Assessment Department at the Authority, articulated the framework’s purpose as reflecting a commitment to integrating modern technologies within education whilst protecting learners’ data, reinforcing teachers’ essential roles and developing students’ capacity for rigorous, independent critical analysis. The framework aspires to facilitate adaptive learning experiences, foster genuine innovation and cultivate teachers’ proficiency whilst equipping students with the capabilities requisite for future advancement.
The guidelines address academic integrity through comprehensive protocols governing artificial intelligence use in assignments, projects and assessments. Educational institutions are required to implement disclosure mechanisms where appropriate and ensure that machine-generated content complements rather than displaces students’ original intellectual labour or teachers’ instructional authority. Verification of artificial intelligence-generated information and rigorous examination of sources remain essential safeguards.
The initiative extends to institutional applications, establishing standards for artificial intelligence use in media and promotional materials to safeguard official symbols, visual identity and ensure content accuracy in compliance with approved standards. Practical guidelines accommodate the diverse curricula and learning environments across Sharjah’s private schools whilst clearly delineating the responsibilities of school leaders, teaching professionals, students, information technology teams, educational specialists and parents.
This multifaceted approach reflects the Authority’s commitment to advancing technological sophistication whilst maintaining the highest educational standards, protecting learners’ fundamental rights and preserving the indispensable human dimensions of teaching and learning.
