Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammed Medical City achieves clinical breakthrough in rare neurological case

SEHA's flagship facility in Al Ain has successfully diagnosed and treated a complex case of autoimmune limbic encephalitis, showcasing the institution's advanced neurological capabilities and multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammed Medical City, operated by SEHA—the largest healthcare group in the Middle East and a subsidiary of PureHealth—has demonstrated significant clinical expertise in managing a rare and potentially life-threatening neurological condition affecting a 38-year-old male patient.
The patient presented to the facility’s emergency department following episodes of severe dizziness, loss of consciousness and acute pain in his right upper limb. During sleep, he experienced episodes characterised by limb stiffening and oral secretions, each persisting for at least two minutes and followed by periods of agitation and disorientation.
Comprehensive neurological assessment and specialised brain monitoring led clinicians to identify temporal lobe epilepsy secondary to autoimmune limbic encephalitis—a rare inflammatory condition of the brain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed symmetric cortical thickening and characteristic hyperintensity patterns in the mesial temporal lobes and limbic system, consistent with the diagnosis. Additional findings indicated isolated demyelination in the frontal and anterior temporal white matter regions.
Dr. Ahmed Samir Farw, Neurologist at SEHA’s STMC, emphasised the significance of the clinical achievement: “This case represents an extraordinary success of early recognition, multidisciplinary teamwork, and treatment. Potentially disabling neurological conditions were identified and managed promptly, enabling the patient to regain full functional stability and quality of life.”
The patient’s existing medical conditions—well-controlled diabetes and hypertension—required careful consideration throughout his treatment pathway. Following appropriate pharmaceutical intervention, the patient attained medical stability and has recovered full functional capacity, underscoring the institution’s commitment to delivering rapid, evidence-based neurological care of the highest standard.
This case exemplifies SEHA’s STMC’s position as a centre of clinical excellence in the region, where sophisticated diagnostic capabilities combine with specialist expertise and collaborative care protocols to achieve optimal patient outcomes in complex neurological presentations.
