The President of Benin encounters the message of tolerance at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

A visiting head of state finds in Abu Dhabi's most celebrated sanctuary a living testament to the values of coexistence and cultural dialogue that define the Emirates
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with its luminous courtyards and soaring halls, received President Romuald Wadagni of Benin on 25th October, a moment of diplomatic encounter within one of the Islamic world’s most accomplished architectural achievements. The Beninese President arrived accompanied by his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Corinne Amori Brunet, alongside the UAE Ambassador to Benin and Professor Badirou Aguemon, the Beninese Ambassador to the Emirates.
Dr. Yousif Abdallah Alobaidli, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, guided the delegation through the sanctuary’s contemplative spaces, speaking to the profound cultural significance embedded within its design. The mosque stands as more than a place of worship; it embodies the philosophical foundations of coexistence and tolerance that flow from the vision of the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Dr. Alobaidli emphasised the centre’s continuing commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue and deepening understanding between civilisations.
The architectural tour, conducted by specialist Hind Al Muhairbi, revealed the intricate fusion of diverse artistic traditions harmonising within the building’s structure. Each marble column, each calibrated curve of arch and dome, demonstrates how distinct cultural influences can unite in service of beauty and shared human expression. The mosque’s design speaks a language that transcends borders, a fact not lost on visitors who come to understand not merely its technical magnificence but its deeper message.
President Wadagni and his delegation paid their respects at the mausoleum of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, acknowledging the profound legacy of a leader whose vision of peace and wisdom continues to define Emirati culture. The visit underscores the enduring relevance of his philosophy in contemporary global affairs. As we reported in our coverage of the UAE and World Bank Group’s capacity-building initiative across Africa, the Emirates remains committed to strengthening partnerships with African nations through dialogue and exchange.
Before departing, President Wadagni received a carefully selected gift reflecting the mosque’s artistic heritage, along with a copy of “Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Lights of Peace,” a publication that documents the sanctuary’s architectural splendour through award-winning imagery from the “Spaces of Light” competition.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
The visit illustrates Abu Dhabi’s role as a centre for international dialogue and cultural understanding. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque serves as an ambassador for the Emirates’ foundational values, welcoming leaders and dignitaries from across the world and demonstrating how architectural excellence and spiritual purpose can convey messages of tolerance and coexistence to global audiences.
For Abu Dhabi’s residents and visitors alike, such exchanges reinforce the emirate’s position as a place where diverse traditions meet and flourish. The mosque remains a living embodiment of Sheikh Zayed’s legacy, continuing to shape how the world perceives Emirati culture and values.
