UAE and Saudi Arabia Forge Strategic Partnership on Railway and Energy Infrastructure

Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi and Saudi Arabia's Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman have signed a landmark memorandum establishing a framework for enhanced rail connectivity, logistics integration and electricity interconnection between the two nations.

A significant step forward in regional infrastructure cooperation was marked today as the UAE Minister of Investment and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Riyadh, cementing the bilateral commitment to strengthened strategic ties.

The accord establishes a comprehensive framework for developing railway connectivity between the Emirates and the Kingdom, with the primary objective of facilitating seamless movement of goods and cargo across borders. By advancing cross-border transport infrastructure, the initiative seeks to unlock substantial opportunities for integrated economic development and regional commerce.

Central to the agreement is a commitment to undertake detailed technical and economic studies that will support the establishment of efficient logistics corridors. These assessments will examine the viability and design of rail systems whilst simultaneously addressing supply-chain optimisation and the removal of trade barriers between the two nations.

Beyond rail infrastructure, the MoU encompasses a significant energy dimension, addressing electricity interconnection between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The agreement mandates comprehensive feasibility studies—encompassing technical, economic and environmental considerations—to evaluate the scope and feasibility of electricity exchange and sale arrangements.

The energy cooperation framework also emphasises coordination with fellow Gulf Cooperation Council member states, reflecting a commitment to expanding the existing Gulf electricity interconnection system. By enhancing regional energy connectivity and system efficiency, the initiative positions the GCC as a unified economic entity with integrated infrastructure capable of supporting sustainable growth and resilience across the Arabian Peninsula.

This development represents a continuation of the robust partnership between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, underpinning the shared vision for regional prosperity, enhanced logistics efficiency, and optimised energy distribution across the Gulf region.
