UAE Parliament Advances International Diplomacy at IPU Assembly in Tanzania

The Federal National Council participates in strategic coordination meetings alongside fellow parliamentary bodies, advancing shared positions on maritime security and regional cooperation.

The Federal National Council has participated in a series of coordinated meetings within the Inter-Parliamentary Union framework, taking place in Arusha, Tanzania on the sidelines of the IPU’s 153rd Assembly and 218th Governing Council session.

Led by Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Defence, Interior and Foreign Affairs Committee, the UAE delegation engaged with representatives from the Gulf, Arab, Asian and Islamic parliamentary groups. These consultation forums addressed substantive matters concerning the Assembly’s agenda, including forthcoming committee appointments and the election of the IPU’s leadership.

A significant focus emerged during the Islamic Group’s consultative session, where delegates examined an emergency item brought forward by Bahrain’s parliamentary delegation regarding maritime freedom of navigation and international trade security. Dr. Marwan Al Muhairi, representing the Federal National Council, underscored the pressing nature of these concerns amid current challenges to international shipping lanes. He advocated for unified parliamentary responses and collaborative action to reinforce global maritime security whilst maintaining adherence to international legal frameworks.

The coordination meetings further reviewed appointments and elections within IPU committees, with the Arab Group considering candidates for vacant positions and hearing statements from prospective leadership candidates.

Ahmed Mir Hashim Khouri, another FNC member, emphasised the expanding significance of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing complex regional circumstances and transnational difficulties. He noted that such channels offer adaptable mechanisms for constructive engagement, facilitating greater understanding between nations. Mr Khouri highlighted the UAE’s distinctive approach to harmonising parliamentary and governmental diplomacy, referencing the nation’s commitments to fostering dialogue and peace initiatives, alongside the Federal National Council’s substantial contributions to IPU activities and parliamentary friendship networks.
