UAE Pledges US$10 Million to Combat Ebola Outbreak in Africa
At the direction of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Emirates has committed substantial financial and material support to international efforts tackling the Ebola crisis across the African continent.
The United Arab Emirates has announced a US$10 million allocation to support global initiatives addressing the Ebola outbreak in Africa, channelled through the UAE Aid Agency. The commitment was unveiled during an international forum convened by the United States on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, bringing together nations and organisations focused on strengthening the collective response to the health emergency.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, emphasised that the nation’s contribution reflects its unwavering dedication to international humanitarian cooperation. He highlighted that this commitment stems from the UAE’s foundational humanitarian mission and its responsibility to safeguard global communities from the threats posed by disease and epidemic outbreaks, working in partnership with governments, multilateral institutions and regional bodies.
Beyond financial support, the UAE has demonstrated tangible commitment through operational assistance. The nation has dispatched more than 150 tonnes of humanitarian aid to affected regions, comprising protective equipment, infection-control materials and supplies that have reached approximately 280 health facilities. Additional support has included shelter provisions and food supplies for impacted populations.
Dr. Al Ameri stressed the imperative for coordinated global action, urging the international community to intensify collaborative efforts and accelerate response mechanisms during these critical circumstances. He emphasised the necessity of strengthening healthcare infrastructure in affected nations, with particular focus on prevention capabilities, early detection systems and rapid response protocols.
The Ebola outbreak, which has affected the Democratic Republic of the Congo and expanded across additional territories, presents substantial challenges requiring enhanced international coordination and expedited action to contain transmission and mitigate humanitarian consequences. The UAE’s combined financial commitment, medical supplies and operational support underscores the nation’s role as a responsible global partner committed to addressing transnational health crises.
