UAE Positions Itself as Global Leader in 6G Development Through Forward-Looking Strategy

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority has outlined an ambitious roadmap to shape the future of telecommunications, building on the nation's pioneering 5G achievements.
The United Arab Emirates is charting an ambitious course towards sixth-generation telecommunications technology, positioning itself not as a passive adopter but as an active architect of the next generation of global digital infrastructure. Eng. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director-General of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, articulated this vision at the inaugural 6G MENA 2026 conference held in Abu Dhabi, emphasising that the future belongs to nations that prepare for technological transformation rather than merely respond to it.
The UAE’s approach reflects a comprehensive understanding of 6G’s potential, viewing the technology as far more than enhanced connectivity. Rather, it represents a transformative shift towards intelligent, secure and adaptable digital systems capable of supporting a sophisticated modern economy, advancing societal wellbeing and enabling sophisticated governance. This perspective underpins the nation’s forward-looking 6G roadmap, which seeks to establish the UAE as a meaningful contributor to international standards development and the technological direction of next-generation networks.
The country enters this pivotal phase from a position of considerable strength. As the first nation to launch 5G networks in 2018, the UAE has achieved comprehensive coverage of over 99.5 per cent of populated areas through more than 23,000 base stations, serving more than 10 million subscribers. This foundation extends beyond commercial deployment; advanced trials conducted over five years in the upper frequency ranges of the 6 GHz band have demonstrated download speeds reaching 10 gigabits per second, showcasing the remarkable potential of next-generation communications to enable autonomous mobility, sophisticated healthcare applications and the development of genuinely intelligent cities.
The 6G MENA 2026 conference, organised by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, brought together over 40 distinguished representatives from regulatory bodies, leading technology enterprises and prestigious academic and research institutions from around the world. The gathering addressed several strategic imperatives shaping the global telecommunications landscape: the development of artificial intelligence-native networks, spectrum allocation for 6G, preparations for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027, and the sophisticated integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks including satellite technologies.
A particularly significant dimension of the conference involved exploring mechanisms to strengthen regional participation in shaping international 6G standards and technical specifications. This approach ensures that the diverse requirements and future priorities of Middle Eastern and North African markets are meaningfully reflected in the standards that will govern the technologies of tomorrow. The discussions emphasised the importance of regional coordination on spectrum matters and regulatory frameworks, recognising that global technological advancement benefits from diverse perspectives and contributions.
The proceedings encompassed comprehensive panel discussions and keynote addresses delivered by senior officials and subject matter experts, complemented by an Innovation and Demonstrations Showcase, scientific presentations and research exhibits. These elements collectively provided participants with insights into the most recent developments in 6G technologies and their prospective applications across diverse sectors and economies.
