University of Sharjah Achieves Global Excellence in Sustainability Curriculum Rankings
The University of Sharjah has secured first place globally in the curriculum category of the prestigious STARS sustainability framework, whilst earning the Middle East's first Platinum rating for overall institutional sustainability.
The University of Sharjah has attained a remarkable distinction in global sustainability assessment, ranking first worldwide in the curriculum category of the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), the internationally recognised framework administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
This outstanding achievement follows the University’s receipt of an overall Platinum rating, a historic milestone that establishes it as the first institution in the Middle East to reach this pinnacle of sustainability excellence, and the highest-rated university across the United Arab Emirates.
According to the latest STARS 2.2 performance metrics, the University of Sharjah demonstrated exceptional performance across multiple sustainability categories. The institution achieved a perfect 100% score in the Curriculum category, testament to the comprehensive integration of sustainability principles throughout its academic frameworks and research activities. This achievement reflects the institution’s commitment to embedding environmental consciousness within its educational mission.
Beyond curriculum excellence, the University distinguished itself globally in several additional performance areas. It secured second place internationally in the Wellbeing and Work category with a score of 89.3%, underscoring the quality of its campus working environment and its dedication to staff and student health. In Food and Dining operations, the University ranked second globally with 68.9%, reflecting robust practices in sustainable food procurement and dining management. The institution also achieved third place globally in Public Engagement, scoring 97.8%, acknowledging its comprehensive community awareness programmes and strategic initiatives.
Building upon these achievements, the University of Sharjah is preparing to launch an innovative Eco-Representatives programme. This initiative will invite students to serve as sustainability ambassadors throughout the campus community, leading environmental awareness campaigns and championing sustainable practices within student residences and academic departments. The programme represents a distinctive approach to embedding sustainability within the fabric of daily campus life through student leadership and peer engagement.
These accomplishments align with the University’s strategic sustainability vision and climate commitment. The institution has established ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions by 47% by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These objectives will be pursued through rigorous technical assessments and the development of innovative sustainable solutions across all campus operations.
