Technology Innovation Institute and Naval Group Chart Course in Autonomous Underwater Exploration

A strategic partnership between Abu Dhabi's research institute and a global naval defence leader aims to accelerate the development of uncrewed underwater vehicles, marrying scientific innovation with operational capability.

The waters of advanced maritime technology have deepened with the announcement of a significant collaboration between the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and Naval Group, a global authority in naval defence systems. Unveiled during Euronaval 2026 in Paris, the partnership represents a convergence of complementary strengths: TII’s pioneering research into autonomous underwater systems and Naval Group’s extensive experience in unmanned combat underwater capabilities.

At the heart of this alliance lies the exploration of uncrewed underwater vehicles, with particular focus on TII’s extra-large unmanned underwater vehicle (XLUUV) platform. The two organisations will pursue joint development and commercialisation opportunities, seeking solutions that address the intricate demands of contemporary maritime operations while fortifying autonomous underwater capabilities within the UAE.

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, Chief Executive Officer at TII, articulated the significance of the moment. “Autonomous underwater technologies are becoming central to the future of maritime operations. At TII, we have built a strong research base in underwater autonomy and systems that can operate reliably in complex environments. Our collaboration with Naval Group brings together complementary strengths in research and naval engineering, creating opportunities to accelerate technology from laboratory capability to deployed system.”

Aurore Neuschwander, Executive Vice President Drones, Autonomous and Underwater weapons systems at Naval Group, emphasised the depth of the relationship. “Building on the close and longstanding relationship between Naval Group and the UAE, this partnership with TII reflects our shared ambition to foster innovation and develop cutting-edge autonomous underwater capabilities. These capabilities will be essential in addressing the evolving maritime security challenges for the country.”

The collaboration situates itself within a broader trajectory of technological advancement in the UAE. As the nation continues to chart new directions in maritime innovation through strategic defence partnerships, initiatives such as this underscore Abu Dhabi’s commitment to developing indigenous capabilities while engaging with world-leading partners. The partnership also reflects the UAE’s positioning as a global innovation leader in harnessing advanced technology for strategic purposes.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This agreement signifies a pivotal moment for Abu Dhabi’s maritime and defence technology landscape. The collaboration between TII and Naval Group will accelerate the transition of autonomous underwater research from theoretical frameworks into operational systems, enhancing the UAE’s sovereign capabilities in a domain of increasing strategic importance. The focus on uncrewed underwater vehicles positions Abu Dhabi at the forefront of a technological frontier that will define maritime operations in the decades ahead.

Beyond the immediate technological gains, the partnership reinforces Abu Dhabi’s role as a destination for advanced research and development. By bringing together homegrown research excellence with international naval engineering expertise, the initiative demonstrates how the emirate’s commitment to innovation, coupled with its strategic relationships, creates opportunities to develop capabilities that serve both national security and broader maritime interests.
