Future Cities Leadership Majlis Convenes to Shape Urban Excellence and Sustainable Growth

Distinguished leaders and global experts gathered to explore how cities can balance rapid development with resilience, quality of life and forward-thinking urban planning.
The Future Cities Leadership Majlis, convened as part of the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum, brought together an assembly of visionary leaders, decision-makers and internationally recognised experts to examine the intricate balance between accelerating urban growth and the adaptive capacity of cities to preserve quality of life whilst advancing infrastructure and service efficiency.
The forum provided a platform for deliberation on Dubai’s exemplary journey in constructing a resilient and integrated metropolis, one that seamlessly accommodates expanding populations and economic ambitions whilst sustaining its distinguished reputation as a premier destination for residents, professionals and visitors alike.
Marwan bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, articulated a vision rooted in proactive stewardship and long-term strategic thinking. He emphasised that Dubai’s approach represents a model of urban governance aspiring towards perpetual advancement, driven by the visionary guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The fundamental principle, he explained, centres on cultivating a city distinguished by resilience, foresight and anticipatory capacity, one that prepares its capabilities before challenges materialise.
The Majlis explored the transition from conventional urban planning methodologies towards an integrated framework that anticipates emerging requirements, fortifies municipal readiness and invests in intelligent infrastructure systems. This approach seeks to sustain exceptional service quality, resource sustainability and a living environment centred fundamentally on human wellbeing and aspirations.
Distinguished architect João Albuquerque of architecture and design firm BIG contributed profound insights on translating ambitious visions into tangible urban projects. He illuminated the essential role leadership plays in refining complex ideas into feasible undertakings through clear mandate definition, strategic alliance formation and effective challenge management. Albuquerque emphasised that transformative initiatives realise their full potential only when supported by leadership possessing the sophistication to distil complexity, communicate clearly and harmonise ambitions with community requirements.
A particularly illuminating session addressed the fundamental question of urban liveability. Albuquerque posited that cities flourish through seemingly modest elements of quotidian experience: the provision of shade, accessible mobility, physical comfort, spatial proximity, aesthetic consideration, intuitive design and opportunities for meaningful social connection. He articulated a compelling distinction between cities that merely project futuristic aesthetics and those that authentically enhance everyday existence for their inhabitants.
The deliberations underscored that urban success transcends monumental achievement, instead residing in how thoughtfully cities integrate advancement with the granular details of daily life. Smart urban development, the discussions revealed, transforms visionary ambitions into lived experience through design consideration that prioritises comfort, fluid movement and user ease.
The Majlis represents one of several strategic convocations within the broader Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum, an annually held congregation of approximately one thousand preeminent government and private sector leaders, alongside esteemed academics and practitioners, dedicated to examining transformations shaping Dubai’s trajectory and advancing the emirate’s position in global competition and influence.
